You have probably done it. Maybe you did it recently.

A customer asks your price and before you can stop yourself, you follow it up with an explanation. A justification. A little apology tucked in at the end.

“It might seem like a lot, but I use really good ingredients…”

“I know it is more than the supermarket, but mine are handmade…”

“I do not want to charge too much…”

The apology is not about the price. It is about permission. You are waiting for someone else to tell you that it is okay to want what you want. Recognition that what you do has value.

But that permission is never coming from the outside. It has to come from you. And the moment it does, things start to change.

You Stop Discounting Before Anyone Even Asks

One of the most common patterns in home baking businesses is pre-emptive discounting. A customer has not questioned your price. They have not even flinched. But you have already started chipping away at it in your own head, or worse, in your message to them.

When you stop apologising for wanting more, that pattern breaks. You quote your price. You let it sit. You trust that the right customers will see the value in what you have built.

And those who do not? They were never your customers.

This is not about being rigid or difficult. It is about understanding that your price is a reflection of your time, your skill, your ingredients, and the years you have spent getting good at this. Apologising for it tells people to question it too.

Your Communication Gets Cleaner

Apologetic energy does not just show up in pricing conversations. It shows up everywhere.

In the way you write your Instagram captions. In how you describe your business to people you meet. In the way you handle enquiries, set boundaries around orders, and respond when someone pushes back.

When you give yourself permission to want more, your communication becomes clearer. You are not hedging or over-explaining. You are stating what you offer, what it costs, and who it is for.

That clarity is magnetic. It builds trust faster than any amount of over-justification ever could.

Customers can feel the difference between someone who stands behind their work and someone who is hoping they will not get found out. One of those people gets bookings. The other spends a lot of time waiting.

You Start Making Decisions Based on Where You Are Going, Not Where You Have Been

So many home bakers are making business decisions based on an old story. A story that says they are “just” doing this as a hobby. Or that they cannot charge professional rates because they do not have a commercial kitchen yet. Or that they can’t charge that ‘in my area’.

When you decide you are allowed to want more, those stories start to lose their grip. You begin to ask different questions.

Not “what will people accept?” but “what do I need to make this work?”

Not “am I good enough to charge that?” but “what do I need to put in place to get there?

That is a business owner mindset. And it changes the decisions you make every single day, from which orders you take, to how you spend your time, to what you invest in.

You Attract Different Customers

This is the part that surprises people most. When you shift how you carry yourself, the enquiries change.

Not because you have done anything dramatically different in your marketing, but because the energy of what you put out has changed. Your content sounds more confident. Your pricing reflects your worth. Your offers are clear and considered. And that speaks directly to customers who are ready to invest in quality, not customers who are hunting for the cheapest option.

There will always be people who want cheap. You do not have to build your business around them.

You Stop Burning Out Trying to Earn the Right to Exist

There is a particular kind of exhaustion that comes from running a business from a place of apology. You say yes to every order. You stay up until midnight to accommodate last-minute requests. You undercharge and then overdeliver to compensate.

You pour more in, hoping that eventually you will feel like you have done enough. You do not burn out because you are weak or bad at managing your time. You burn out because you are trying to earn permission you already have.

When you stop apologising for wanting a real business, a fair income, and work that fits your life, you start making structural changes.

You set a minimum order. You close your books when you need to. You raise your prices instead of adding more hours.

Your business starts to work for you instead of consuming you.

So What Actually Has to Change?

Not as much as you think.

You do not need a rebrand. You do not need a new website. You do not need to wait until your business looks a certain way.

You need to make a decision. A quiet, internal one.

That you are allowed to want more. That wanting a profitable business does not make you greedy. That charging properly does not make you difficult. That having standards does not make you arrogant.

It makes you a business owner.
